Why timing matters more than the calendar
Sealer does not dry the way paint does. It cures, and it needs warmth and dry weather to do it. Sealer put down in the cold stays soft, can wash off, and will not bond well to the driveway.
Makers say the same thing. SealMaster says temperatures need to stay above 50 degrees during application and for at least 24 hours after. Always read the label on the product you use, since some are different.
What late fall looks like on the West Shore
By the end of October, mornings in Mechanicsburg and Lemoyne are often in the 30s or 40s. Even a sunny afternoon can drop back below 50 by evening. Leaves and damp shade also keep a driveway wet.
If you have a stretch of mild, dry days in the forecast, sealing can still work. If you do not, waiting is the safer choice. A driveway sealed too cold can look worse than one left alone.
Why people want to seal before winter
The worry is real. Water gets into small cracks, freezes, and pushes the cracks wider. Then it thaws and does it again. Over a winter, a thin crack can turn into a pothole or a crumbled edge.
Sealer helps slow that down by keeping water out of the surface. But it works best on a driveway that was cleaned first and sealed in the right weather.
What to do now if it is too cold to seal
You do not have to leave the driveway alone all winter. A few simple steps now will help it get through the freeze and thaw.
- Sweep off leaves, dirt and debris so water can drain.
- Pull weeds out of the cracks.
- Fill the larger cracks with a crack filler made for driveways, following the label for the temperature it needs.
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear so water does not run across the driveway and freeze.
- Plan the full sealing job for spring.
Sealing in spring
Spring is a good time to seal. The ground has warmed, the days are dry more often, and the winter damage is easy to see. You can book a spring job now.
When we seal a driveway, we clean it first. Then the sealer goes down edge to edge, and we can do the apron at the street if you want it. Keep cars off for about 24 to 48 hours. Most driveways need sealing every 2 to 3 years. See our Driveway Sealcoating page for more.

Common questions
Should I seal my driveway before winter?
Only if you have several dry days at 50 degrees or warmer, and that is rare by November in Camp Hill. If not, fill cracks now and seal in spring.
What happens if I seal my driveway when it is too cold?
The sealer may not cure. It can stay soft, peel, or wash off, and you may have to redo it.
Should I seal my driveway every year?
Most driveways do not need it that often. Every 2 to 3 years is typical.
How long should I stay off a freshly sealed driveway?
Keep cars off for about 24 to 48 hours. If you are unsure about foot traffic, ask us.
